Jacob Robertson – Spring 2016 Post Reflection (Washington DC)

While volunteering at DC Central Kitchen, I was able to apply the teamwork and collaborative skills I have gained as a science major to the industrial kitchen setting. These skills were helpful since it was necessary to work and interact with APSU students, other volunteers, and the kitchen employees. The experience resulted in a newfound appreciation for the Kitchen and its mission. The mission of DC Central Kitchen goes beyond simply sustaining a physical need, such as hunger. The Kitchen’s mission also includes a commitment to improving the lives and empowering the people whom they serve through their cullinary training and job placement program. Being a part of this mission over spring break has made me realize the importance of providing opportunity to disadvantaged individuals and that it is always possible to do more. I plan to uphold and apply this approach when participating in future volunteer and service opportunities.
